 Know animals for safety

  A 22-year old pet-sitter was nearly torn part by 2 big dogs she had already met once before. 

  They had a baby in the house who the dogs understood were part of their pack, the girl was probably seen as an intruder, not part of the family, they protected their home and attacked the girl. 

  They said she had pet-sit for 6-years, but there’s no way a 22-year old could understand the finer details of animal behavior such as trigger points, much less the potential danger of dogs. 

  She probably walked right in thinking they were going to be the sweet dogs they were before, and was blind-sided. 

The owners didn’t seem to understand trigger points either. 

  It’s such a dichotomy to think of the thousands of animals who are neglected, abandoned or abused, and not realize that tho dogs can be protective, affectionate, and entertaining, they all have basic instincts and behaviors to one degree or another that should be understood. 

Sometimes I think Mr Dave Ramsey and Mr Cesar Milan should be required reading courses in schools. They both teach safety.

  Dave Ramsey teaches financial safety and Mr Milan teaches physical safety. Do they still have police officers and firemen talk at schools? Or career days? Or Home Economics? Caring for a home while raising a family is no easy task! 

   Anyway, the girl is receiving the best of care and kudos to her boyfriend for sticking by her. I’ll try to follow up the story after years and hope it’s a blessed one. 

Who is St Patrick..?

From Wikipedia;  

 -Saint Patrick was a 5th-century Romano-British Christian missionary and Bishop in Ireland. 

Much of what is known about Saint Patrick comes from the Declaration, which was allegedly written by Patrick himself. 

It is believed that he was born in Roman Britain in the fourth century, into a wealthy Romano-British family. 

His father was a deacon and his grandfather was a priest in the Christian church. According to the Declaration, at the age of sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Gaelic Ireland. 

It says that he spent six years there working as a shepherd and that during this time he found God. 

The Declaration says that God told Patrick to flee to the coast, where a ship would be waiting to take him home. After making his way home, Patrick went on to become a priest.

According to tradition, Patrick returned to Ireland to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity. The Declaration says that he spent many years evangelising in the northern half of Ireland and converted thousands.

Patrick's efforts were eventually turned into an allegory in which he drove "snakes" out of Ireland, despite the fact that snakes were not known to inhabit the region.

Tradition holds that he died on 17 March and was buried at Downpatrick.

 Over the following centuries, many legends grew up around Patrick and he became Ireland's foremost saint.

Then I find this..!

 

After making a reasonable argument for the purpose, safety, and beauty of the common curb, 

I come across this, The Roundabout..! 

Now these are fun, trendy, and attractive, sorta like a dramatic snowstorm.

Check it out; this is a typical roundabout during the day;

Look at the daylight again, what do u not see? 

 Those curbs have no reflectors, not even painted. 

At best, driving thru the roundabouts during daylight is like like driving in Italy, a tad chaotic…

Look at the night view, what do u not see? 

That’s right, no curbs..! They’re invisible at night, totally dark. 

What else do u not see?

 There’s no stop lights, no lights at all, no signs, no reflectors to be seen anywhere, all lights in the night pic are reflections from nearby buildings, random decorative lo-light street lamps, car headlights, and no signs, reflective or not, no signs, just jump in and hope for the best. 

Driving thru those roundabouts at night is like driving in a beautiful rainstorm, fun, wheeeee :-p

I remember the Wildlife Waystation

 Remembering Martine Colette

1942 - 2022

The primate sanctuary community, including the Chimpanzees In Need rescue effort, is mourning the loss of animal advocacy pioneer and Wildlife Waystation founder Martine Colette, who dedicated more than 40 years of her life rescuing animals and changing the face of animal welfare.
 
It was Colette’s overwhelming love of animals that led her to leave a successful career as a Hollywood costume designer and establish the first wildlife sanctuary in the United States, taking in exotic animals from around the world, partnering with state agencies to safely house animals in need, and leading a cultural shift in animal welfare and sanctuary – including being one of the first to care for chimpanzees retired from biomedical laboratory research. By the time she retired in 2019, she had helped rescue and care for more than 77,000 animals who might not otherwise have had safe homes.
 
Following a series of fires and floods that contributed to financial hardships, the Wildlife Waystation closed shortly after Colette’s retirement was announced. The California Department of Fish & Wildlife, NAPSA, and sanctuaries across the country are collaborating to offer new homes to the 480 animals that were living there, including 41 chimpanzees.
 
Today, 23 of those chimpanzees have been rehomed but 18 remain at the closed refuge, where they are cared for by staff who worked at Colette’s side for decades. Our Chimpanzees In Need effort will continue raising the funds to move these remaining primates to accredited sanctuaries equipped to offer the loving care that Colette would want for the chimps.

Isolated

 Update: it happened so fast that I immediately self-isolated, which is what we used to do whenever anyone we knew got sick. 

The first week was wonderful! A relief and a comfort for the first few days. By the second week, I was getting cabin-fever and time seemed to slow to a crawl. The worst was over, tho, thank goodness, and I was able to work a few hours last week. 

I should have been back up and running by this coming Monday, but I’d forgotten how weak isolating can make the muscles of the body. Going for walks today and hoping for the best. No fever, just general malaise. Didn’t even work from home! A lot of emails went unanswered and hope to catch up sometime next week. 

For those who are stuck at home, my prayers of strength for u, it’s tougher than anyone thought! 

I tell everyone to please adopt, and yet…

 Here I am telling everyone to please adopt, and yet I realize that it takes a good chunk of time and finances when done right with quality and care. 

A lot of people prolly don’t think ahead that far, so do what u can. 

 

This is a business card from a rescue that started out with good intentions, then lost in over-reach, and can’t be found now. From what I understand, all the critters were fed and watered and in good condition, it didn’t cost that much for food, and the shelters were basically lean-to’s, but it wasn’t overcrowded, and kept swept-clean. They gave several years leases on life for many dogs that wouldn’t have survived otherwise. 

And then it happened again, they couldn’t say no! Took in more and more abandoned critters to save them temporarily, and neglect began to appear for the original rescues. 

I don’t know what happened to the lady who started the rescue. I’d heard various versions of several stories, but I have no idea as of this writing if the owner was a fly-by-night, a crook, or an Angel..!?! 

Have no idea! 

In a way, it doesn’t matter, because critters can always be adopted, but should u have to surrender one,  especially ones found, rings, or on a regular basis, that’s when u want to make sure the rescue is a stable location. 

Dog N Kitty City is still going strong. 

and Operation Kindness is still around and looks solid. 

There are hundreds of rescues for all critters and breed specific, too.
